PLEASE NOTE – AS OF 2017 WE ARE NO LONG LOCATED AT SPACE RETRO
We were involved in supplying fashion watches to the people of Harrogate and visitors to the town @ Space Harrogate from 2009- 2016 and had many happy years here. We left in October/Nov 2016, as we wish to focus our business online and were unable to sell pre owned watches due to another dealer being in the store and this is now our main focus.
“Shop. Eat. Reminisce. Chill out.”
A warm welcome awaits you at SPACE. Established in Harrogate in 2009, SPACE is one of the North’s largest and most enticing retro centres.

SPACE Harrogate : History
SPACE burst onto the local shopping scene in 2009, created by shop owner Steve Elvidge, former front man of British Alternative Rock Dance group ‘Age of Chance’, who were signed to major label Virgin and had support from Radio 1 late legend DJ John Peel in the mid to late 80’s. In its first year the shop claimed a PLUSH Award by being voted Harrogate’s Favourite New Business.
SPACE is home to around 15 individual vintage specialist retailers.
SPACE has provided a perfect environment for independent retail businesses to start-up, exhibit, and grow their businesses. It has also given several young people valuable work experience.
In Feb 2011, SPACE Harrogate was recommended as one of the UK’s best shops by Gok Wan’s Channel 4 Clothes Roadshow Team.
Yorkshire Post 2012 : From THE ART OF VINTAGE VALUE
“According to Stephanie, the best place in the Harrogate area to become inspired by vintage, is Space Vintage, in The Ginnel, just off Harrogate’s Parliament Street. This is the first and biggest of Harrogate’s bespoke vintage shops.
A visit here is guaranteed to plunge you back into your childhood, as you feast your eyes on vintage toys, tea-sets, tables, typewriters, twinsets, and just about anything else you can think of from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Neither cheap, nor expensive; the vintage merchandise is just there in great quantities waiting to be bought, with no finding effort on your behalf.
Stephanie’s delights from this store include a couple of huge original 70s style paintings, Italian ceramics, (in the style and colour of the popular Rimini Blue, but at half the price), and an art deco fire companion set, to name but a few.
They always have a large selection of German pottery, vintage Poole pottery, clothes, scarves, jewellery, and an ever changing array of original retro furniture and homewares.”
January 2014 Relocation
In January 2014, we up-sticks and moved to a larger unit, slightly further down the hill, opposite travelodge and Pit Bar. Major Toms Social joined us upstairs and Wall of Sound, a dedicated record shop from Huddersfield joined us to open a record shop upstairs.
“Space retro and vintage store launched its new store this week at The Ginnel, off Parliament Street in Harrogate (right next door to where it used to be). It’s set to be a true asset to the town, THE place to go for authentic one-off pieces, covering fashion, accessories, jewellery, homewares and curios.
Not only that, it’s got a bar/cafe and a record store on the first floor. Major Tom’s Social is a serene and airy cafe by day, and at night, it becomes an atmospheric and friendly bar with a chilled vibe. Run by owners Lee Bellwood and Toby Smith (the chaps behind Leeds-based Baby Jupiter), the plan is to offer artisan beers, meat and cheese boards and pizzas, and have live bands, great music and lots of chillin’.
All of which means this is a most welcome addition to the town, offering not just a cool place for shopping and browsing, but also a stylish yet non-pretentious venue for a drink and a bite. We hope it does very well indeed and urge you to pop along to check it out.
The ground floor truly is a treasure trove, an emporium to gorgeous vintage fashion and homewares – prices range from a couple of pounds to £1,295 for a 1950s’ Dior couture gown (the one in the mirror at the top of the post). Dealers include: Beatniks; Shado; Ben Jays Vintage; Vintage Emporium by Keeley Harris; Polka Dot Vintage and Books 4 All.
It’s all run under the stewardship of Steve Elvidge, pictured here with his wife, Stacey Farrell-Elvidge, on the first floor. Steve says he moved Space from next door simply because they had outgrown the premises. And now there’s room for that fantastic bar.
